Install Fast Finder on Windows (beta)

Unzip the folder and run FAST.exe. The Windows version is a beta for Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit. It is not code-signed yet, so Windows can show a warning or block it.

Install

  1. Open https://fastfinder.dev/dl/win/latest in your browser. The download starts.
  2. Right-click the zip and choose Extract All.
  3. Put the folder anywhere, for example on your Desktop.
  4. Open the FastFinder-0.1 folder.
  5. Double-click FAST.exe.

If SmartScreen warns

Windows shows a blue window because the beta has no code-signing certificate.

  1. In the blue window, press More info.
  2. Press Run anyway.

If there is no Run anyway button, a Windows setting blocks apps that are not signed. This can be Smart App Control, or a rule that your company set. The beta cannot run on that PC until the build is signed. Do not turn off these settings to run the beta.

Check the download (optional)

  1. Open PowerShell.
  2. Run this command: Get-FileHash $HOME\Downloads\FastFinder-0.1.0-beta-16d236ee-win-x64.zip -Algorithm SHA256
  3. Compare the result with the SHA-256 on https://fastfinder.dev/download.

What the beta does not have

The Windows beta has no Hyperdrive search engine (Mac only), no search index, no Quick Look, no tags, no Trash view (use the Recycle Bin), and no cloud marks. Search reads the names in the open folder and below it, for up to 8 seconds.

In shortcuts, Ctrl takes the place of Cmd.
