Fast Finder help

First run

The first time you open Fast Finder, a short welcome guide explains the window, search, and one optional offer. You can skip it at any time.

The welcome guide

  1. Read the first card. It shows the privacy promise and one switch for anonymous usage counts.
  2. Press Next. The second card shows the window: Sidebar, List, Details, and Fast search.
  3. Press Next. The third card explains search. On a Mac, the first time, Hyperdrive builds an index of your home folder in the background. Classic answers searches until it is ready. In our tests on one Mac with 6.7 million items in the home folder, the first index build took about 28 seconds.
  4. Press Next. On a Mac, the last card offers Talk2me, once. You can press "Not now". See Talk2me.
  5. Press Get started.

Press Esc or Skip to close the guide early. To see the guide again, open Settings (the gear at the top right).

Allow folder access

macOS may ask you to allow access to folders such as Documents, Desktop or Downloads. Allow it so Fast Finder can list them.

Usage counts

The usage-count switch is "Help us improve Fast Finder for everyone". It is anonymous. You can turn it off at any time. See Privacy.

The switch starts on. In some regions it starts off, and the welcome card asks you first. These regions are the European Union and European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and a Mac set to French (Canada). Fast Finder reads your Mac's language and region setting to decide.

The index

While the index builds, a spinning ring shows near the search box (Hyperdrive search on a Mac, Fast search on Windows). A faint note shows beside the box. On a Mac, it says "Hyperdrive indexing... it takes a little while, but it is worth it." Search works during this time. Classic answers searches during the first index build.

Settings

The gear at the top right opens Settings, Privacy, Help, About and License.
