Fast Finder for Windows

A file manager for Windows, in beta.

The same app as on the Mac, for Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit. Browsing, file work and Tailscale work in this beta. Some Mac features are not there yet. It is free.

What works and what is missing

Works in the beta

  • Sidebar with your folders and drives, the folder tree and tabs
  • All five views, sorting, dark and light themes
  • Copy, cut, paste, rename, new folder, delete to the Recycle Bin
  • Search by name in a folder (up to 8 seconds, no disk index)
  • Your other machines over Tailscale
  • Keyboard shortcuts, with Ctrl in place of ⌘

Not in the beta yet

  • The search index and search inside files
  • Quick Look, image previews and system thumbnails
  • Tags
  • The Trash view and Put Back (use the Recycle Bin)
  • Cloud marks for online-only files
  • Open in Terminal and Run command
  • A code signature

Install

  1. Download the zip. FastFinder-0.1.0-beta-3ea291eb-win-x64.zip, 18.3 MB.
  2. Unzip it anywhere, for example on your Desktop. Right-click the zip and choose Extract All.
  3. Double-click FAST.exe in the FastFinder-0.1 folder.

If SmartScreen warns

The beta is not signed with a code-signing certificate yet, so Windows warns the first time you open it.

  1. In the blue window, press More info.
  2. Press Run anyway.

No Run anyway button? Then Smart App Control is on. It blocks apps that are not signed, so the beta cannot run on that PC until the build is signed.

To check the file first, compare its SHA-256 with the value on the download page:

Get-FileHash $HOME\Downloads\FastFinder-0.1.0-beta-3ea291eb-win-x64.zip -Algorithm SHA256

Tailscale

With Tailscale on both computers, the beta can browse your Macs, and your Macs can browse the PC. How browsing over Tailscale works.

Remove it

Delete the FastFinder-0.1 folder. The settings are in %APPDATA%\FastFinder; you can delete that folder too.
