Peek and Details

Look at a file without opening it. Use the Details sidebar or Quick Look.

Show the Details sidebar

  1. Select a file.
  2. Press Cmd+Shift+P. The Details sidebar opens on the right.
  3. Press Cmd+Shift+P again to close it.

Make it wider

  1. Press Cmd+Shift+E to switch the sidebar between normal and wide.

What it shows

  • On Mac: Markdown, plain text and source code (with line numbers), CSV and TSV tables, JSON as a tree that folds, pictures, the first page of a PDF, and HTML pages.
  • On Mac, the picture types are JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, WebP, HEIC and HEIF. A photo also shows a short summary of its EXIF data. A GPS position stays hidden until you ask for it.
  • On Mac, an HTML page is drawn as a page, with no scripts and no network. A Source button shows the text of the page.
  • On Windows: Markdown, plain text and source code, CSV and TSV tables, and JSON. Pictures, PDF and HTML pages are not drawn yet.
  • Tables are shown as tables.
  • A Markdown, text or JSON file over 1 MB gets no Peek. Peek shows only the start of a long CSV file.

Quick Look (Mac)

  1. Select a file.
  2. Press Space. Quick Look opens.
  3. Press Space or Esc to close it.

On Windows, Space opens and closes the Details sidebar. There is no Quick Look.

Online-only cloud files

On a Mac, Peek never downloads an online-only file by accident. The Windows beta cannot tell which files are online-only. See Cloud files.
