Where they appear
A provider shows in the sidebar section Cloud only when its folder exists on your Mac.
Online-only files
On a Mac, an online-only file is in the cloud and not stored on your Mac. Fast Finder marks it. Rules on a Mac:
- Listing, folder sizes, Peek, pictures, Quick Look and text search never download an online-only file by accident.
- Opening one asks first and says the size.
- Copying more than 100 MB of online-only files asks first.
Search
Hyperdrive never asks a cloud provider to download anything, including files, placeholders and folder listings. In a Home search with Hyperdrive, Fast Finder adds the matching files from your cloud folders (OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud Drive) to the same list. When Home already has 2,000 or more matches, Fast Finder shows the first 2,000 and says more exist. Type more of the name, or search inside the cloud folder, to see its files. See Search engines.
Search inside files never reads an online-only file.
Full Disk Access
Hyperdrive reads only what macOS lets Fast Finder read. During its first scan, macOS may ask once for Desktop, Documents and Downloads. If a folder stays blocked, Hyperdrive does not answer for your home folder, and Classic answers instead.
Without Full Disk Access, Classic searches Documents, Downloads and OneDrive through Spotlight. The status bar then shows a button that opens the Privacy pane of System Settings.
Windows
The Windows beta has no cloud marks. Every file counts as local. The Mac rules on this page do not apply to the Windows beta. It does not ask before it opens, previews or copies an online-only file. OneDrive can then download that file. Picture thumbnails in icon views also read the file. Folder sizes and name search do not open files.
